Bachelor in Education Courses at Holly Bank

Many thanks to Stephen Garside who has provided this note of his experience of completing a B Ed course in 1991/93. He also gives a list of the tutors he remembers from those days.
 
He writes:  

I was reminiscing with my wife Helen Balbontin, who I met at Professor Newbold's cheese and wine party at Hollybank in 1991. I then stumbled on your site. We studied for a B Ed at Holly Bank and I stayed in the halls of residence for a couple of terms. Lots of great memories.

There were three B Ed courses: Technology which comprised separate specialisms in Design Technology and Business Studies, and Music. Both involved two years of study including two teaching placements. All students studied pedagogy alongside their specialist subjects.

The courses were based in the MacLennan Centre which had various workshops. Teacher training as a whole moved to the main campus of Huddersfield University shortly after we left.

We did borrow some of the tutors detailed on your list: Mike Cook who I remember was an excellent, engaging teacher; Peter Mackenzie who was delightful and Dave Thompson who was again a very interesting man and delivered an excellent lecture on Marie Curie.
 
The bar was run by a guy named Stan and the staff in the halls of residence were lovely, especially the kitchen staff. Prof Newbold lived on the top floor in his flat.
 
There was a separate course operating alongside us: a nursing qualification for students from Malaysia.
